Blog Status Update
I started this blog almost 5 months ago not knowing anything. Everything, was foreign to me. This blog was and is no easy task. If you have ever googled how to make a blog, apparently it is the easiest thing. If all you want to do is post your thoughts and have your family read it, then sure, it’s pretty simple and free. But, if you want to make money and have traffic coming to your site there is a lot to learn and there is a bit of an investment.
I’m not going to teach you how to start a blog in this post because honestly, I couldn’t really tell you how. I got a lot of help and I still consider myself as a beginner. I will however, give you a blog status update. Hold on to your pants because it ain’t pretty.
In The Beginning…
The reason I started a blog was to ‘dip my toes’ in the online world. I’ve mentioned before that my future goals involved moving away for the winter with my partner. In order for this to happen, I needed to find a way to earn money while being away. With absolutely no experience, I figured starting a blog would be a simple way to ease my way into figuring out how to earn money online.
Currently, I work at the hospital that gives me benefits, pension, great pay and I am pretty high on the seniority list. So how could I leave this? In short, I may be comfortable but I am not happy.
Truthfully, I probably wouldn’t be blogging if it weren’t for my partner. Not saying he forced me into wanting to switch careers, he just help me see that there’s more to life and has helped me reshape my mindset. He is, or I guess was, a digital nomad prior to meeting me and hearing all of his stories made me really think about my own life and what’s important to me and what I really want for myself and us.
If you’re wondering about mindsets, check out this post:
Blog Status Update
My first post was on July 28th, 2019. I have 44 posts. Almost 5 months in and I have made a mere $4.92 being an Amazon affiliate. Last month I signed up for Google Adsense and haven’t made anything from that yet.
Slow and steady they say. Well let me say, slow sucks.
In the past 30 days, I’ve had 305 page views. What doesn’t suck is seeing that I’ve had visitors from China, Germany, Croatia, Hungary, USA, and then some. Just knowing that I have readers from around the world feels so good. Even with the blog not doing so great (traffic and income-wise), this makes me want to continue!
Also, I have a couple of backlinks! I am stoked. It’s minute but still, I think it’s something to be proud of!
Some of you may scoff at how little I’ve come and I would probably scoff alongside with you. But, I am making a change for myself so that I can be happier and that’s what I am taking away from this entire experience. So what if this blog is going nowhere right now. I’m okay with it because I know some things take time and I have hopes for it. I know I’m going at a sloth pace but I also am learning quite a few things by blogging that maybe in time, will help me with something in the future. I am making a move, albeit slow, but it’s movement.
Am I Doing This All Wrong? Yes.
Please don’t let my dismal blog stats deter you from starting your own blog. If anything, it is a great way share your thoughts and learn something new.
Blog Status Update: I am obviously doing this all wrong. The fact that I started is what’s important though, right? RIGHT??
I spend maybe a few hours each each working on blog and I post once a week. Not a ton, but enough. There is still a lot of trial and error with the site builder but it’s sort of fun and doesn’t take nearly as long to figure out.
I had quite a bit of help at the beginning to set everything up and get things moving along but OMG, I know for a fact I wouldn’t be this far (funny cause my blog is still very basic) without any help. Some help I’ve disregarded though.
For example: I never ended up finishing either of the courses that Mitch told me to do and in hindsight, I should have finished them. Sure, I could still get back to it but if you know me, I am a stubborn woman. I want to do things my way. Obviously my way isn’t working so well for me but like I said, I AM STUBBORN! Every now and then I’ll read stuff on Search Engine Optimization (SEO), ways to increase traffic and other fun stuff that can help put my blog on the map, but not much luck so far.
Plus, I still don’t have a specific niche. Instead, I have two: travelling and minimalism. I can’t make up my mind. Both topics have over-saturated the internet but it’s what I know and enjoy. One day it may change but for now, you’ll have to enjoy one or the other but hopefully both!
Note to self: incorporate some of the tips suggested by M.Griffin at https://www.melyssagriffin.com/increase-blog-traffic-updating-old-posts/
Please comment, which you prefer to read about though. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
The Future of NomadGirlfriend
Whether you like it or not, I will continue to give you updates of the status of this blog. In the future, you may also come across another blog of mine. I have so many ideas for different blogs as well and maybe one day those will come to fruition. Time will tell.
In less than a month, Mitch and I will be headed off to Mexico for a month for a workation! I’m really hoping that I can concentrate on this blog a bit more as well as learn some computer skills such as video editing, scheduling or media marketing. I’ll keep you updated on how that all goes…if it goes at all!
